ADHD Assessment Policy
Due to the overwhelming quantity of referrals for ADHD assessments,
the following policies will be enforced to ensure a viable service for
all patients.
-
Patients presenting for ADHD assessment often have a very strong
opinion about their diagnosis. However, your appointment does not
include time to debate your diagnosis. If you disagree with the
diagnosis, your option is to seek a second opinion with another
clinician.
-
Confirming the presence of several inattentive or
hyperactive-impulsive symptoms prior to age 12 is required for
a diagnosis of ADHD.
Self-report is not sufficient to confirm this. Childhood records
(i.e. report cards) is the preferred source. Your appointment will not
be scheduled until a collateral source has been secured.
I recommend securing a copy of your Kindergarten through
Grade 6 report cards. This can usually be
done by emailing a request to the Vice Principal or administrative
staff of the last high school you attended. Your K-6 records
are almost always available if you graduated from high school
within the last 10-15 years. Once you have acquired them, send them
to me and I can schedule your appointment.
-
In order for your assessment to be covered by MCP,
a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required.
The assessment must be considered medically
necessary. The referring provider determines the medical necessity
before submitting a referral.
-
All appointments will be arranged through email. Please ensure that
I have your email address and that you check your inbox regularly.
-
Your appointment time will be assigned. I am unable to accommodate
your personal scheduling preferences.
-
You must confirm your appointment time within 48 hours of receiving
the appointment notice, otherwise the slot may be given to another
patient.
-
Cancellations must be done a MINIMUM of 48 hours before the scheduled
start time of your appointment.
-
If you miss your appointment or cancel late,
you will be charged the full cost of
an assessment. Currently, the charge is $330 and is subject
to increase. The charge is to compensate me for the lost income
resulting from your missed / canceled appointment.
MCP will not pay for an appointment unless you attend it.
-
An appointment will not be scheduled if there is an outstanding balance
for a missed appointment.
-
It is crucial that you are on time for your appointment and allot 90
minutes from the scheduled start time. You should prepare to wait up to
30 minutes for your appointment to start. Failure to do any of this is
likely to result in a missed appointment charge.
-
You must be in a private space to participate in a virtual assessment.
If you present to your appointment in a space that isn't private,
the appointment may be canceled and you may be charged for a missed
appointment. Virtual visits for ADHD will not be completed via phone.
All virtual visits are completed through secure
Telus Virtual Video Visit.
-
You must be physically located in Newfoundland and Labrador at
the time of the assessment. Failing to ensure this may result in a
missed appointment fee as the appointment will have to be canceled.
-
Any forms, letters, applications or other supporting documentation are
subject to a separate fee. These take considerable time to complete and
I get many requests. This service is not covered by MCP.
-
A diagnosis of ADHD does NOT qualify you for a Disability Tax Credit.
